The citadel of Saint-Tropez is typical of pre-Vauban fortifications from the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of a hexagonal keep built between 1602 and 1608 according to the plans of the military engineer Raymond de Bonnefons to which were added a large bastioned enclosure and a system of moats and counterscarps. Back then, the citadel of Saint-Tropez constituted the most important defensive structure of the Mediterranean coast between Antibes and Toulon.
