Founded by King François I in 1518, the port of Le Havre lost its military status to remain only commercial in 1824. In 2006 it extended to the south over the sea with Port 2000, dedicated to containers. Today, it is the 1st French port for containers and the 2nd for maritime activity. With its industrial zone, it covers 24,710 acres (10,000 ha) over eight municipalities and represents 30,000 jobs.
