In 1690, Honfleur's port became floating under the impetus of Colbert. Twenty-two years of work allowed it to welcome large boats able to circumnavigate the world. The starting point for Newfoundland or merchants heading to the Americas, a haven for the King's privateers, Honfleur prospered and developed. Large and tall houses grew around the Havre de l'Enclos and Quai Sainte-Catherine. Mrs. de Montpensier sold the lands along the new quay in small plots, hence the obligation to build high up. The dwellings are adorned with slate tiles, sometimes decorated with marine or religious motifs.
