A port created by Louis XIV in 1666

The port of Sète in the Hérault department is the most important fishing port in the Mediterranean. In 1666 the first stone of the Môle Saint Louis was laid following the will of Louis XIV to create an export port for local Languedoc products. The creation of a 2,132 feet long (650 m) port protection breakwater marked the birth of the port of Sète. It developed in the 19th century thanks to the wine, sulfur, wood, cereals, and iron trades. Until the 1970s, the port of Sète was also a transit port for citrus fruits (oranges and lemons), first from the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, then from Algeria and Morocco.
