The construction of Nice's port staggered over a century and a half from the decision of Charles-Emmanuel III of Piedmont-Sardinia to endow his kingdom with a maritime outlet in 1749. He then chose the marshy pond of Lympia, east of the city, to carry out his project for an artificial harbor. Two basins were dug, followed by the creation of an arsenal, quays, and eventually the whole port district.
