Created from 1967 to 1974 as a reservoir for the Marne river, the Lac du Der-Chantecoq is located in the heart of Champagne region. All along its 50 miles (80 km) of banks, quiet zones are reserved for the 310 species of birds that have been recorded to date. Since 1991, the lake and its side ponds have been part of the “Important Bird Area in Champagne-Ardenne” (ZICO CA 05). The lake is a popular site for Common Cranes (Grus grus), which stop here on their southward migration. Every year, from autumn to spring, cranes, geese, raptors and all kinds of ducks frequent the lake.
