A popular religious monument

The site of the Sacré-Cœur basilica is steeped in history. It was on the Butte Montmartre that the Commune revolt began in 1871. In the aftermath of this bloody episode, the construction of the Basilica and its 83-metre-high dome was intended to appease people's minds. The porch is pierced by three semi-circular bays. Bas-reliefs represent the four cardinal virtues: prudence, courage, temperance, and justice. The two equestrian statues and the three historiated doors are by the sculptor Hippolyte Lefèbvre. The Sacré-Coeur is the most visited religious monument, second only to Notre-Dame de Paris.
