At the beginning of the 20th century, the term zouk referred in the French West Indies to popular dance venues and designated hot balls. Even today, it is used to talk about dance evenings organized by individuals and refers, in connection with them, to one of the most popular dances in Martinique. Easy to learn, zouk follows a musical rhythm in four beats and alternates right foot and left foot. It organizes its basic step on two measures corresponding to six movements.
