In the Orne department, the city of Alençon has an age-old architectural heritage that constitutes a pool of buildings listed as Historical Monuments and recognized by UNESCO. Its town center is home to the castle of the Dukes of Alençon. Erected in the 12th century, it was rebuilt between the 14th and 15th centuries. Destroyed during the French Revolution, it became a prison from 1804 to 2010. The city bought it back in 2018.
