Commissioned by Chancellor Nicolas Rolin from the Brussels artist Rogier van der Weyden, the polyptych of the Last Judgment of the Hospices of Beaune is composed of nine panels when it is open, to which are added the six panels of its closed presentation. The open altarpiece represents Christ as Supreme Judge. Dressed in a purple robe, his right hand raised, he beckons to the chosen ones to come to him and sends the others back to hell with his lowered left hand. At his feet, the four angels announcing the Last Judgment surround the white-robed Archangel Saint Michael, who weighs the resuscitated.
