Even if it is said to be appreciated by fairies, Lake Longemer was also a place of pagan worship. Local legends tell that a giant tree occupied the valley. He plunged it into darkness and prevented all nature from settling there. As men could not overcome the tree, God sent them the birds and mammals of the region. The men redoubled their efforts with axes, the rodents ate the roots, while the wild boars pushed the tree to make it fall. The tree eventually fell. God then caused a storm so intense that the hole left by the roots filled up and became the Longemer lake.
