The village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse preserves numerous fragments of a past where the memory of Petrarch and the Bishops of Cavaillon rubs shoulders with the traces of industrial and artisanal heritages (paper, spun glass and crystal, wood, pottery, jewelry, cutlery, leather, stained glass) closely linked to the Sorgue river. Beyond the remains of the Castle of the Bishops of Cavaillon that dominate the village and the Roman irrigation canal, the Saint-Véran-Sainte-Marie church, built on the ruins of a pagan temple and listed as a Historical Monument, stands. The column erected in 1804 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Petrarch also recalls that Fontaine-de-Vaucluse was a place of literary and romantic pilgrimage that attracted Lamartine, Chateaubriand, Stendhal, and Georges Sand.
