A place of devotion since Celtic times

Today dedicated to sports and tourist activities, the Sancy massif was a devotion site as soon as the Celtic period. Its volcanic sources were deified, and numerous megaliths were erected on its area. Later, the Romans built a pantheon there to honor their divinities. Numerous crosses mark its summits and passes (Col de la Croix Saint-Robert, Col de la Croix-Morand) and Notre-Dame de Vassivière sanctuary nestles on its slopes at an altitude of 4,265 ft (1,300 m). The Puy de Sancy itself, formerly called Puy de Saint-Sixte, has long remained a place of pilgrimage.
