The remains of the theater of Saint-Pierre in Martinique are protected as a Historical Monument by a decree of December 12, 1996. Distinguished for their classical architecture, they also recall the appearance of lyrical art in Martinique at the end of the 18th century in the prosperous town of Saint-Pierre overlooked by Mount Pelée. Having become one of the first commercial places in the region, the locality introduced its inhabitants to the new pleasures of the theater on December 16, 1786, with the performances of « The Power of Zeal » and « The Judgment of Midas ». The troops from Europe sometimes supplemented by local artists passed through Saint-Pierre before performing in the United States, New Orleans, Venezuela, Santo Domingo, or the English-speaking West Indies. The public made up of connoisseurs - whether in Pierrotine high society or among people of color, free and slaves - allowed the mixing of all social categories.
