A resort residence for the presidents of the French Republic since 1968, the Fort de Brégançon also serves as a summer reception venue for several heads of state and foreign dignitaries. Among them, Helmut Kohl, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, visited the fort in 1985 at the invitation of François Mitterrand. The President of the Algerian Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika was invited by Jacques Chirac in 2004, while Nicolas Sarkozy hosted the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2008. The current French President, Emmanuel Macron, welcomed the British Prime Minister Theresa May, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel at the Fort de Brégançon in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
