At the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, 10 squares, separated by the central alley into two groups of 5, form the space dedicated to the graves where 9,387 soldiers are buried, including 307 unknowns and 4 women. They died on the D-Day or in the following weeks in the Battle of Normandy. Fourteen thousand bodies, initially buried in Normandy, were repatriated to the United States at the request of their relatives. At the crossing of the main alleys, the Chapel shelters a black marble altar bearing the inscription: I give them eternal life and they shall never perish.
