A pilgrimage followed by the great and the good

From the Middle Ages, the pilgrimage to Saint-Maximin where the relics attributed to Sainte Mary Magdalene are buried and to the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine cave in the Sainte-Baume massif intensified. It followed the path connecting the plain of Saint-Maximin - Nans les Pins to the sacred mountain. Laid out at the end of the 14th century, this route is now one of the many hiking trails in the Sainte-Baume massif as well as a capital stage in the Tour de France des Compagnons. It received the name of Chemin des Roys because of the forty or so sovereigns and famous people who traveled it from Saint Louis in 1254 to Louis XIV in 1660 via Louis XI, François Ier, Louis XIII, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, Queen Maria Cristina of Spain, the Popes of Avignon, Petrarch, Frédéric Mistral, or Charles de Foucault.
