A Philippian-style castle

The archetype of the so-called Philippian castles - i.e. which follow the castral model of Philippe II Auguste (King of France from 1180-1223) such as the castle under construction at Guédelon - takes the form of a fortress with a rectangular enclosure. It has various recurring characteristics, such as towers at the corners and at the curtain walls, dwellings and services organized along the enclosure, a door arranged between two towers in the middle of a curtain wall, and a master tower. A key element, the master tower either stands in the center of the ensemble or, more frequently, at the corner of two curtain walls. The castles of the Louvre and Dourdan, respectively built in the 1190s and 1220s, were the most dynamic vectors for the dissemination of this regular rectangular scheme to the four corners of the territory leading to both a defensive and symbolic normalization.
