At its peak in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Cistercian community of Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey numbered around forty monks compared to seven today. Enriched by numerous donations from the Agoult Simiane family of Gordes and the lords of Venasque, the abbey had four mills, seven barns, a hospital in Arles, a hospice in Pernes-les-Fontaines, a farm in Maussane as well as several houses in L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, Cavaillon, Carpentras, and Marseille. The herds of Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey had the right to graze from Mont Ventoux to Sisteron.
