Industrialized since the end of the 18th century, the exploitation of ocher in Luberon reached its peak in 1928, with a production of 40,000 tons, before declining. The open-air and underground quarries were gradually abandoned, with the exception of a single site still operating at Gargas in the Vaucluse department. Elsewhere, nature has gradually regained its rights and offers visitors colorful and contrasting landscapes unique in France.
