The Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) belongs to the Ciconiiforms order and the Ardeidae family. The cousin of the stork, it is 2.95 to 3.21 ft (90 to 98 cm) high with a wingspan of 5.74 to 6.39 ft (175 and 195 cm). It weighs between 1.32 to 2.64 lbs (600 and 1,200 grams) and can live up to 25 years. Essentially a fisherman, the Gray Heron is found near water ponds and rivers. Out of season, it supplements its diet with amphibians, crustaceans, reptiles, and small rodents. It fishes on the lookout and can wait for its prey on one leg without moving. Its trigger is quick and its sharp beak allows it to skewer its prey. The Gray Heron perches high in trees to nest.
