Essentially built between 1335 and 1352 under the reigns of Popes Benedict XII (1334-1342) and Clement VI (1342-1352), the Palais des Papes of Avignon underwent comfort improvements during the time of Popes Innocent VI (1352-1362) and Urban V (1362-1370). After the Great Western Schism (1378-1417), it became the residence of legates and vice-legates until the Revolution before its transformation into barracks and its opening to visitors at the start of the 20th century. Since 1947, the Palais des Papes' main courtyard has hosted the performances of the Avignon Festival created by Jean Vilar.
