Preserved almost intact since the 17th and 18th centuries, the Darse of Villefranche-sur-Mer is an invaluable maritime treasure. It corresponds to the old port and the old arsenal successively owned by the Duchy of Savoy and the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. With its basin, mole, rope factory, fairing area, arsenal, forge, galley-slave hospital, and its former docks, the Darse of Villefranche-sur-Mer is the only French example of a port directly inherited from the time of the sailing navy.
