A northern part dominated by volcanic massifs

The northern part of Martinique is dominated by volcanic massifs whose height is around or exceeds 3,280 ft (1,000 m). Their accentuated morphology and the abundant rainfall to which they are subjected make them particularly sensitive to erosion. The same phenomenon happens on the steep northern coast that can be seen here near Macouba. Its cliff character and tormented underwater relief prevent the accumulation and displacement of volcaniclastic detrital particles along the coast and lead them to the deep sea. The thinning of the beaches is further accentuated by the marine hydrodynamic characteristics of the Atlantic Ocean that borders the coastline.
