Inaugurated in Saint-Pierre on Friday, December 13, 2019, the new Observatoire Volcanologique et Sismologique de la Martinique (OVSM) replaced the former Morne des Cadets observatory built in 1932 in Fonds-Saint-Denis. This modern building equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment progress is located 1.2 miles (2 km) below the old observatory on the way to the Caribbean coast. It offers a direct view on Mount Pelée (4,583 ft / 1,397 m) which dominates the island and is its only active volcano.
