At that time, the challenge was so significant that it is said that only a pact with the Devil allowed its architect Pierre Perrat to design it. He was praised for his prowess and, when he died, was buried in a secret place in the cathedral. The nave of Saint Stephen Cathedral indeed climbs up to 136 ft (41.41 m). Its sober columns enhance the 1.60 acres (6,500 m²) stained-glass windows gallery of the cathedral's walls. The monument was built on the exact location of a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Stephen in the 5th century.
