Nestled at an altitude of 1,017 feet (310 meters) in a blind valley typical of the Jura geology, the caves of Baume-les-Messieurs were discovered in 1610 and explored in 1893. Dug on the side of one of the three valleys whose formation lasted more than 200 million years, they are classified Natura 2000, just like the Tufs waterfall located in their immediate vicinity.
