At the time of the Christianization of Provence, the islands of Hyères were mostly known for the foundations of the pious characters who settled there, such as the religious scholar and poet François d'Oberto, known as the monk of the Golden Islands. It was back then, around the 14th century, that the name Îles d'Or (Golden Islands) began to be used, mostly to designate the islands of Port-Cros and Le Levant. A few decades later, King Francis I of France included Bagaud, Port-Cros, and Le Levant islands in the Marquisate of the Isles-d'Or and gave them to Bertrand d'Ornesan, an army general, in 1531.
