A mysteriously named massif

0
Known as Serra de l'Albera in Catalan, the Albères massif constitutes the easternmost part of the Pyrenees chain. We know very little about the etymology of the word Albères for lack of archives. One hypothesis suggests that it comes from the Latin Albaria constructed by adding the suffix -aria to the adjective albus (white). However, the massif not being particularly white, this definition is not entirely satisfactory. The Albères massif, shared between France and Spain, culminates at Pic du Néoulous 4,120 ft (1,256 m) above sea level.
