A once dominant port

Formerly at the center of all the maritime activities of the city of Marseille, the Vieux-Port (Old Port) has seen its economic role diminish over the past fifty years. Today, it essentially stands out as a municipal marina, just like the ports of Pointe Rouge, Frioul, or Estaque. In the mid-1970s, all activities related to fishing and the fish auction in the Vieux-Port were transferred to the port of Saumaty. As for the traffic of passengers and goods and the maintenance of cruise ships, they are now carried out at the Grand Port Maritime of Marseille north of the Vieux-Port.
