A multi-thousand-year-old history

Occupied since prehistoric times, the Dentelles de Montmirail massif has a multi-thousand-year-old history, as evidenced by the major archaeological discoveries made in Vaison-la-Romaine and elsewhere. It also housed early Christian places of worship such as an abbey of nuns and a chapel and developed muscadières to supply the cellars of the Popes of Avignon with Muscat wine. The massif's numerous oppida also made it possible to control the roads that linked the north and the south between the valleys of the Rhône and the Ouvèze and the more contrasting relief with depressions and cuestas of the foothills of the Mont Ventoux.
