Linked to France’s history and royalty for having long remained one of the strongholds of the Medicis family, Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise is now a small town of 1,501 inhabitants (as of 2014) nestled at an altitude of 3,445 feet (1,050 metres). Located in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park near the Sancy massif and only 4.35 miles (7 km) from Super-Besse ski resort, it experiences harsh and snowy winters.
