A mould made of clay, dung, and fibres
0
0
In order to make a bell, the first step is to build a mould which will be filled with molten bronze. The moulding material – a mixture of clay, horse dung, and goat hair – is capable of withstanding temperatures of over 2,012°F (1,100°C). The core of the mould is made of refractory bricks, fitting the inner template of the bell. It is then covered with the moulding material: the interior of the bell is now finished. The next steps are to make the false bell, to lay the wax decorations, to build the cope and crown, and finally the pouring.
