The location of Cluny Abbey on the border between the Frankish world and the Holy Roman Empire or the Occitan language to the south and that of oïl to the north is still visible today on the roofs of its buildings. The tiles to the north are flat, while slightly arched canal tiles have been used to the south. As for the steeper Eau Bénite (Holy Water) bell tower and Tour de l'Horloge (Clock Tower), they are covered with slates.
