A monument of Byzantine inspiration

Consecrated on June 5, 1864, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica is a monument of Byzantine inspiration. The green stones of Golfalina used for the exterior rub shoulders with the white marble of Carrara and the red marble of Brignoles for the interior. The Romano-Byzantine style of the whole is characteristic of the major constructions undertaken in Marseille under Napoleon III. Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is, indeed, marked by the domes, the polychromy of the stones, and the profusion of gold and mosaics.
