The barquette marseillaise is a modest-sized boat traditionally designed for small-scale coastal fishing known as au petit métier. It is 13 to 29 ft (4 to 9 m) long, and its simple and economical construction technique involves the use of the Saint Joseph template, which saves the carpenter a complete layout and the making of new templates for the execution of each pair of the frame. The barquette marseillaise thus differs from other boats (mourre de pouar, Catalan barquettes, etc.) by the lightness of its construction.
