A mix of Romanesque and Gothic

The city of Caen houses the monuments of the Dukes of Normandy. Its city hall is installed in the Abbaye-aux-Hommes built by William the Conqueror and his wife Mathilde to repair the illegality of their marriage. Although remodeled in Gothic style, the abbey church still displays all the richness of its Romanesque architecture. It served as a model for many English churches after the conquest of the country by William in 1066. The choir, restored in the 13th century in the Gothic style, houses the tomb of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England.
