The legend surrounding its construction tells that it was built thanks to a pact with the Devil. Only He could conceive its 136 ft high vaults (41.41 m). Metz Cathedral's 1.6 acres glazed surface (6,500 m²) extends among stone lacework in Flamboyant Gothic style. The monument resulted from the merger of two pre-existing churches, the Romanesque basilica from the 10th century and the Notre-Dame-La-Ronde collegiate church (1186).
