A memorial and cultural garden

Pierre-Yves Panor, a poet, novelist, and activist for social progress, is at the origin of the creation of the Martinican An Mao Héritage memorial garden in which this liana tree rises. Implanted on a maroon land on the territory of the municipality of Le Marin on the heights of Morne Gommier, the site is a tribute to the ancestors who left the plantations after the abolition of slavery to invent for themselves new destinies as free women and men. It summons the cultural and humanist heritage they bequeathed: their ideals of peace, freedom, fraternity, and, above all, the love of nature and the science of plants. By highlighting the ancestral knowledge and the preponderant role played by certain trees, plants, legends, and beliefs in the socio-cultural development of Martinique, the site tells the story of the island and preserves its heritage.
