Charterhouses, like the Chartreuse de La Verne in the Massif des Maures, are religious convents belonging to the order of Saint Bruno. They are subject to the authority of a prior, the local superior of the community, elected by his staff or appointed by the major superiors. The first priors of the Chartreuse de la Verne were Didier and Étienne, two bishops of Toulon from the 12th century, and the last one was Joseph-Claude de Geoffroy, before the French Revolution and the departure of the monks to Italy. The inventory carried out in June 1790 after the confiscation of the goods of the Chartreuse de La Verne indicated that its community then consisted of sixteen members divided between eleven fathers and five lay brothers.
