A medieval wonder

This central panel of the Issenheim Altarpiece (first opening) was only unveiled during the great feasts dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Two scenes coexist: on the right a nativity scene and on the left a concert of angels. Numerous symbols provide key information: the walled garden in which the Virgin is standing evokes her virginity; the rosebush without thorns is the image of the sinless woman; the fig tree symbolises the mother’s milk; the baby’s accessories (bed, tub, chamber pot) underline the human nature of Christ who came to Earth. The Issenheim Altarpiece is a medieval wonder in the Unterlinden Museum.
