In the Middle Ages, the Benedictine monks of Hautvillers abbey used this cobbled lane, which links the various buildings of the monastery, every day. Located in the heart of the Montagne de Reims (Reims Mountain) vineyards, crowned by deep forests, Hautvillers is the cradle of champagne. In the 17th century, it was in this abbey that the cellarer monk Dom Pierre Pérignon discovered the method of wine ‘champagnisation’. Thanks to his work on blending, Father Pérignon improved the quality of the wines produced by the abbey and distributed them to the court of King Louis XIV.
