Perched 2,483 ft (757 m) up the Vosges mountains, the 3.7 acres (1.5 ha) Haut-Koenigsbourg is the largest fortified castle in Alsace. The lower courtyard, forge, mill, drawbridge, weapon room, keep, and cannons are reminders of the original vocation of the 12th-century fortress. Partially destroyed several times, it was always reconstructed. Today classified as a Historic Monument, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is one of Alsace's medieval landmarks.
