The domain of the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg sits on a rocky outcrop. Its ramparts surround an area that stretches 885 ft long (270 m) and 131 ft wide (40 m). A maze of corridors, interspersed with small windows, runs through the citadel. The plain of Alsace spreads out downhill, monitored by the 203 ft high (62 m) keep. Despite its advantageous location and defenses, the castle was attacked and destroyed several times throughout its history.
