In France, the Jura massif mainly occupies the Franche-Comté region. It extends to the south in the Rhône-Alpes region, to the east of the department of Ain where it culminates at Crêt de la Neige (5,643 ft / 1,720 m) and to the north-west of the department of Savoie (Chaîne de l'Épine and Dent du Chat). Its northern part joins the extreme south of Alsace.
