The Sainte-Baume massif has a gently sloping southern slope and a steep northern slope. Its formation, like that of the Pyrenean folding, is linked to the collision of the Iberian Peninsula with the European plate 65 million years ago. The southeast of France was then propelled towards the northeast and underwent several deformations, including that of the Sainte-Baume massif.
