The Dives estuary is surrounded by the tip of Cabourg and the hills of Houlgate. Sheltered by a wide strip of dunes, some 300 mooring spots are available, including a space reserved for multihulls. Alongside it, the Port Guillaume wet dock and its pontoons equipped with running water and electricity can accommodate 600 boats with a maximum length of 50 ft (15 m). It was from Dives-sur-Mer that William the Conqueror assembled a fleet of 700 to 1,000 ships to invade England in 1066.
