A mangrove that turned pink in 2020

The Taupinière mangrove in the southwest of Martinique became particularly popular when its waters turned pink in June 2020. This phenomenon is due to the development of non-pathogenic sulfur bacteria, in this case the purple micro-algae Dunaliella salina, but also green sulfur bacteria synthesizing chlorophyll. Aerobic bacteria first degraded the organic matter present in excess and caused anoxia (lack of oxygen) in the environment, creating favorable conditions for the development of sulfur bacteria. The coloring of the water faded when the oxygen saturation increased because the coastal strip no longer represented a major obstacle for the circulation of water between the mangrove and the sea thanks to the rains, high tides, and the decrease in the organic matter (algae, sargassum, mangrove leaves) in decomposition.
