The island of Porquerolles has become one of the most popular tourist sites on the French Riviera, with more than one million visitors each year. Its usual population of 200 to 250 inhabitants explodes from the start of the summer season to reach 12,000 people per day. Such radical change requires a daily boat supply of 105,669 gals (400,000 liters) of drinking water. The island's natural areas are managed by Port-Cros National Park, which is responsible for protecting them from the threat of this excessive tourist traffic.
