Place de l'Archevêché - now Place des Martyrs de la Résistance - of Aix-en-Provence was transformed between the 16th and 18th centuries to take on its current appearance. It went from a narrow street leading to a small square to a large space bordering the former Palais de l'Archevêché and adjoining Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, whose bell tower is visible in the background. Shaded by plane trees planted in the 19th century, the square welcomes in July the spectators of the International Lyric Art Festival who throng to the entrance to the Palais de l'Archevêché.
